The Salvation Army Angel Tree program has opened registration for families seeking holiday assistance for their children, ages one to thirteen. Eligible families can apply online or in person at the Salvation Army Store located on North Tremont Street. To complete the process, applicants must present a medical card, valid identification, and proof of current address. The organization aims to ensure that local children receive gifts during the holiday season, supporting those who face financial hardship. Interested families are encouraged to submit applications before the strict deadline of November 15, 2025, to ensure their children are included in this year’s program. The Kewanee Salvation Army partners with Patchy’s Red, White, and Blue Christmas Toy Drive to fulfill the wishes of all the children in the area. You can pick up angel tags early to start shopping before they go on the tree at Kewanee Wal-Mart.

Spirits, sugar, and stories lit up the classroom this past week. The Spanish classes at WHS honored el Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead) with color, curiosity, and heart. Students explored the roots of the holiday all the way back to the Aztecs, learned about the loyal Xolo dogs believed to guide souls, and met the iconic Catrina who reminds us that death comes for all, yet life is worth celebrating.
From comparing “Coco” to real family traditions, making “sugar skulls”, decorating cookies, and building their own ofrenda (altar) filled with meaning and love, students discovered that Día de los Muertos is a joyful reminder that those we love never truly leave us. Their stories walk beside us, bright as marigolds (cempasúchil) in the sun.

The Wethersfield Community Unit School District #230 is proud to announce that Wethersfield High School has once again earned an “Exemplary” Designation from the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE). This distinction, released today as part of the 2025 Illinois School Report Card, places Wethersfield High School among the top 10 percent of all schools statewide for the second consecutive year.
The “Exemplary” designation is the highest performance level recognized by ISBE and is based on a comprehensive evaluation of several key indicators, including academic achievement, school climate (as measured through the 5Essentials Survey), student attendance, and overall student growth.
“This honor is a reflection of the collective commitment of our students, staff, and families,” said Superintendent Dr. Andrew Brooks. “The Wethersfield community continues to demonstrate what can be achieved when everyone works together to create a positive, supportive, and academically rigorous learning environment.”
The district extends its appreciation to students, parents, teachers, and support staff for their continued efforts and contributions to this success. The Exemplary designation highlights Wethersfield’s ongoing commitment to academic excellence and continuous improvement.
